Plasma separation from whole blood is an important step during sample preparation as it is often required for clinical diagnosis and testing. Therefore, many research efforts have been focused on the integration of this crucial step in Lab-on-Chip and Point-of-Care devices. The main challenge is to be able to achieve both high-throughput and high purity without dilution using a simple and inexpensive equipment. Researchers from Department of Biomedical Engineering, Kyung Hee University describe an integrated strategy based on the combination of a passive separation approach and a “smart pipette” to separate blood plasma from whole blood.
